Author Spotlight:Omar Bala - Inspiring a New Generation Through Stories
Welcome back to Mind the Typos! Today, we're diving into the vibrant world of children's literature with a spotlight on Oakland’s very own Omar Bala. A father and self-published author of eight books, Bala is making waves with his latest release, Nick Got the Ick. This timely story not only teaches kids about how viruses spread and how to stay safe but also showcases a beautiful family collaboration that’s building a lasting legacy. Let’s explore the creativity and inspiration behind this incredible author’s journey!
1. Could you please introduce yourself and tell us about your book?
My name is Omar Bala, and I am from Oakland, California. To date, I have self-published 8 books, but the book I would like to highlight is our upcoming release, Nick Got the Ick. Nick Got the Ick teaches young children how a virus is spread and the ways we can limit or prevent the spread of the Ick. The Ick is a virus that spreads from one individual to the next via physical or viral contact.
2. What inspired you to write your book, and can you tell us about it?
My children are my inspiration. It all started with my son, who has a passion for drawing. He began drawing SpongeBob when he was three years old, so when he turned seven, I decided we would create a book together, with him as the illustrator. From there, we continued to create more books, and then my daughter joined the team and became a published author at six, with her brother as the illustrator. I want to build a legacy that can be passed down for generations. I hope my children can continue to operate BooksByBalas even when I’m gone
3. What themes or messages do you hope readers will take away from your book?
Through my books, I aim to spread self-love and positivity. I want children to feel comfortable in their own skin, love themselves, and always maintain a positive outlook on life. Most importantly, I hope to inspire the next generation of leaders. I want children to know that they can accomplish anything and everything if they believe in themselves.
4. Are there any particular authors or books that influenced your writing style or inspired you?
A book that inspired me was The Autobiography of Malcolm X. After I read that book, my appetite for literature increased. I write children’s books, so a children’s author I resonate with is Mo Willems, the creator of the Piggy and Gerald franchise. His books are simple, yet straight to the point. Sometimes, simplicity is all that’s needed.
5. In what ways do you think your book stands out from others in its genre, and what do you hope sets it apart for readers?
My book stands out from others because it features children of color as protagonists and helps children see that they can accomplish anything at any age. I honestly don’t think there are many families doing what we're doing.
6. Can you discuss any research or preparation you undertook while writing your book, particularly if it involved exploring new topics or settings?
Nick Got the Ick was the only book that required research. I read articles and watched videos to see how viruses spread and how our body eliminates them once an individual is infected.
7. Can you provide insight into your future writing plans or projects? Are there any upcoming releases or ideas you're excited to explore?
Our next title is Daddy and Baby Visit the Zoo. The project is slated for an early spring 2025 release. The book is inspired by true events, taken from the day when I took my youngest daughter to the zoo for the first time. When she gets older, I know she will really love this book because she will be in it, and it will be a day I will never forget, even as I get older and my memory begins to fade.
8. Lastly, could you provide your contact information or social media handles for readers who would like to connect with you?
